Empowered Mothers at Semitropic

Six parents completed the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) series at Semitropic School in Spring 2023.  As part of the series, parents learned about reading tips, literacy games, and the importance of encouraging their students to practice reading at home. Kinder - 5th grade parents spoke about how empowering the experience was.

The program taught me things I did not know or did not think about before. It also provided me with a workbook on how to help my students’ reading skills. It was like I was learning alongside them.

PIQE facilitator, Leslie Iniguez, encouraged parents to get involved by teaching them the ins and outs of asking text-dependent questions and learning how parents can further their students' academic progress, especially for multilingual learners.

After participating in the PIQE program, four parents began to use their voice more often and used their time to create change within the school. They formed a parent group and recruited two more parents to join. They participate in school board meetings and volunteer for various events on campus. They also are more connected to their children's teachers and look for ways to be involved with what is happening at school.

Luchan por los estudiantes de Semitropic - not just their own children. The Community School Coordinator, Janelle Delgado, is proud to have such strong parents who are always working hard and finding ways to empower others. Parent Micaela summed the PIQE experience up nicely…

"Most importantly [PIQE] taught me to spend more time with my children. It gave me the confidence to be more involved and communicate with the school as well as share ideas. If there was an option to do again, I would gladly join and encourage others to do the same." - Micaela
